From Diagnosis to Determination: Rejoice's Journey with Type 1 Diabetes

Image
Rejoice Tsingano I can still vividly remember the pivotal moment in 2018 when I stood in front of the mirror and noticed something startling: my school uniform no longer fit as it once did. "Wait a second, did I just lose some weight?" I asked myself, drawing closer to the mirror to confirm. To my surprise and delight, I had indeed shed a few pounds—a goal I had long aspired to achieve. Little did I know that this unexpected weight loss was a signal of something far more serious. My name is Rejoice Tsingano, and I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on August 8, 2018. But let me take you back a bit further. Two months before my diagnosis, I began to notice the first symptoms: rapid weight loss and a dramatic change in my complexion, which had become so light that people around me speculated I might be bleaching my skin. All of this unfolded while I was attending boarding school in Zvishavane during vacation lessons, preparing for my final O-level exams. Had I been at home, p...

Diaversary: 15 Years of Becoming

Fifteen years. That’s how long I’ve been living with type 1 diabetes. ISPAD 51st Conference, 2025 I was diagnosed three days after Christmas in 2010 — a season meant for joy, abruptly rewritten by hospital corridors, insulin vials, needles, fear, and questions no family is prepared to answer. Life didn’t pause to let us catch our breath. It demanded adaptation — immediately, relentlessly. Diabetes didn’t knock. It arrived and stayed. 3 days before diagnosis, 2010 For many years, survival was the goal. Learning how to inject. Learning how to eat. Learning how to calculate, correct, and carry on. Learning how to live with a condition people rarely see but constantly misunderstand. There were highs and lows — physiological and emotional — and a quiet, exhausting weight that came with having to be vigilant every single day. Diabetes was personal. Private. Heavy. Then came 2019 — the turning point. Nine years after diagnosis, a call was made. An advocacy training camp for two participants l...

Camp Mukundi: Where Health Education Met People Where They Are

Image
Camp Mukundi, random session I have attended and led a number of camps from 2019 to date, but Camp Mukundi was exceptional in a number of ways. It was different by design. It emphasised meeting people where they are, listening before teaching, and making learning practical and participatory. Unlike many health camps we have organised in Zimbabwe, which tend to follow a more formal model dominated by slides and presentations, Camp Mukundi created space for conversation, practical learning, reflection, recreation, peer connection, and—most importantly—the voices of the people actually living with these conditions. As one of the camp co-leads, one of the things I particularly appreciated was the approach we took before any session with an invited speaker or facilitator. We first asked participants what they wanted to learn, what they wanted to be told or advised on, what questions they had, and what they expected from the camp. Their responses were documented and used to guide facilitator...
